2022 Summer Workshop Descriptions

DNA: How to extract it?

Did you know that we share 60% of our DNA with strawberries?
Or that only .1% of your DNA makes you different from other humans?
Join us as we perform a fun DNA extraction experiment on a strawberry!

Gel Electrophoresis: How to catch a criminal!

Ever tried to cut up your own DNA?  It's not possible.. or is it?
In forensic science, scientists use something called gel electrophoresis to create DNA fingerprints.
Want to learn more about how that's done? Join us in this interactive workshop as we

simulate this cool process in a fun and simple way!

Microscopes: Taking a closer look inside you

What do algae, animal cells, ants, atoms, and bacteria all have in common?

They can all be seen under the microscope! Join us as we take a closer look at the smallest

living thing inside you: the cell!

Cells: Sickle Cell Anemia Case Study

Is sickle cell anemia really contagious? Are people with SCD immune to malaria? What are your chances of getting this disease? Before taking a look at this case study, this workshop will cover the different types of blood cells, their function in the body, and lastly.. what happens if they have the wrong shape? We will be simulating our chances of survival against SCD and malaria using changes in allele frequencies!
